Services for cities and regions - place branding - territory marketing

The crux of place branding and building a place brand refers to its true, strong, appealing reputation. In turn, the reputation leads to success and drives revenue, investments, it attracts people and enterprises. Cities and regions must compete with one another in the national and international market with in terms of the offer, talents, available infrastructure, investment climate as well as their image and reputation. Building a comprehensive, recognisable and positive image of places (cities/regions/metropolitan areas/nations) is a prerequisite for “being in the game”. That is why the competences involved in building a brand of a given place must become one of the key competences involved in place management in the future.

Territorial marketing of places is a function of managing communication processes and delivering value to clients of those places within the scope of economic, cultural and social development. It is a process of managing relations with clients of a given place. It is easier to run a city or region, if it has a defined vision of shaping its brand, since everyone knows what it is and what it wants to become. Such a location is also more easily chosen by tourists, investors, students out of many similar competitive offers. A city with a strong brand is perceived positively even when it experiences any temporary difficulties – because its brand has a permanent foothold in people’s hearts and minds.

Place branding is an enormous undertaking that the authorities of cities and regions face in the 21st century. It is a function driving sales, attracting investments, promoting culture and creating prosperity. It is of paramount significance in the sustainable development of cities and regions.

Communication and promotional activities that will be involved in the process of place branding need to constitute something far greater than advertising, logotypes or advertising slogans. They require a systematic analysis, monitoring, coordination and defining of strategic and tactical goals, supporting the fulfilment of a specific vision – in this case: the vision of city, region (metropolitan area, place) development. Their fundamental aim will be to ensure that the possibilities of a given place, its offer, achievements, goals and challenges are fully presented at adequate time to the right recipients in order to build the capital necessary to succeed in the crowded and competitive world.
